Post subject: GMAT guidance .. is 700 enough ...
Archived from groups: soc>college>grad (more info?)

hi,

First the background .... I have just given my GMAT and got a score of
700 . I have done my Btech in IT and have done my MBA in india ( all
from decent colleges ). I have been working for the past year with a
large indian software consultancy firm.
I want to do an MS in finance .

Now for the questions ...

How do i figure out the ranking of colleges for MS finance course
?.The employee perception and the placement are the two criteria i am
looking for .

How do i figure out my chances of getting through to a college ?
(weightage they give to different parts of my application )

How do i figure out the chances of getting a scholarship ?

Which course makes more sense MBA fin or MS fin .. if i want a job in
investment banking ?

How much will it cost me ?

regards
singh

I can't comment on your chances, but a 700 GMAT score is a very solid score.
If your TOEFL score is high and you have a good grade point average in
school, I would think that your chances of getting into a good school are
pretty solid.

Hi,

Given that the score is decent, what would make more sense ,doing an MS
in finance or doing an MBA in finance ,for job opportunities in
banking ?

My instinct is the MBA - but why not ask a couple of potential employers
what they prefer?

The MBA is a little more flexible, which can be a good thing - it can open
the door to managerial positions. If you do well at your MBA in finance you
can consider doing the Ph.D. too; there is a lot of money in finance faculty
and research positions these days.

Actually i got in touch with a professr and he adviced me to do a Phd
..I then asked him whether as a first step i should do an MS or an MBA
and he said doing an MS is better and an MBA will not prepare you for
a Phd .. he also said that first year in MBA is common through out the
world and gave me a list of courses and they were very similar to what
i had already done in my first year MBA here(Marketing,Fin acc,Mang
acc ,eco etc)

The other thing that i have to consider is the job prospect after
finishing the degree . I mean a Phd can take a long time and teaching
is something i dont know anything about whereas banking and related
field are something i have seen (many of my friends are in that field
and my client is an AMC ).

Getting in touch with a potential employer is a good idea and i will
send some them email and wait for a response.

The other question is that of college . MS in finance is not something
that is ranked (as far as i now) and i need some more inputs .what
are the ranking of the various colleges at least group perception
wise.Is there a site where the finance courses are discussed ? I have
heard a lot about MS computational finance from CMU .. are there any
more colleges that offer similar courses ? What about other finance
courses .
