For your edifying..
Consider this quote from JFK's inaugural address.
"For I have sworn before you and Almighty God the same solemn oath our
forbears prescribed nearly a century and three-quarters ago.
The world is very different now. For man holds in his mortal
hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of
human life. And yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our
forebears fought are still at issue around the globe--the belief that
the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state but from
the hand of God."
So, do you, as with JFK and FDR believe our rights come from God, or
are you part of an extremist faction within your party?

So maybe we should all convert to Catholocism because our president was
Catholic?

No. Mostly because all evidence of where our rights come from is to the
contrary.

Since
1) a man can easily take away another's rights; it
happens all the time -- anything from prison
to murder, and since
2) God never shows the slightest inclination to
defend these rights in Person, then
3) it's a difference which makes no difference. Believe
they're God-given if you like, but in practice you
will have whatever rights your society by tradition
grants you. And God will do nothing about it, one
way or another.
I should probably add:
4) the Bible I read is entirely about submission and
obedience to God, and does not in the least support
anything like rugged individualism.
5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear,
and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ.
[Ephesians 6]
1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For
there is no authority except from God, and those that exist
have been instituted by God.
2 Therefore he who resists the authorities resists what God has
appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.

You sorta forgot FDR's statement.
It wasn't this one was it: "God's the joker that gave me polio and, so, it's
all His fault".

I want the person with such power to be smart, really smart, ethical,
moral, caring, etc. A belief in God is not required to enjoy any
of those characteristics.

Nope. VietNam and World War II, respectively.
If our rights came from a god, we wouldn't have to send people to kill and
die for those rights.
Or is this "God gives you rights but, since you're going to have to die
anyway, it might as well be today rather than tomorrow and, besides, church
attendance and the collection plate always improove when there's a war going
on - hopefully, anyway"?

Or have you noticed that God and the Largest Battalions make a lovely couple.
> You don't mind being thought of as an extremist do you?
Oh, why not. It gives the peasantry gossip to while away their dreary
existence; a little excitement for them until a crime show comes on. You know
those folks: when they were children they watched the other children play
cowboys and Indians
Laughing. If Cary is an "extremist" then you must not only have a meagar
existence but an incredibly boring one at that.
Perhaps you might remember what that nice Mr. Goldwater [never mind what John
Latrino Knight calls people of that backgroiund] said, "Extremism is the
pursuit of liberty is no vice."
Of course there are those who would reply, "Losing in the face of a
Presidential race is not extremism". Of course that was before President Bush
was elected by a 5 to 4 vote but nevertheless . . .
> I think . . .
Huh? When did /that/ start? I was under the impression that you were a
believer and, definitely, not a thinker. Isn't Mr. Roy Moore, Esquire, still
doing the thinking for both of you?
Actually, it's a Republican plot. Roy Moore, Esquire, is just another of the
millions that have lost their jobs since President Bush was appointed
President. However, Former Justice and, presently Esquire, Moore should be
able to collect his welfare queen money for another few months.
> . . . you do else why in this world would you of all
> people... be hiding behind the Bible?
Ah, how interesting. You believe that people can "hide behind the Bible",
huh?
Would that mean that someone can kill and then say, "Jesus said to buy
swords" and "I did and I did".
Or that when televangelists get caught coming out of a prostitute's room, he
can say "God says, 'Be fruitful and multiply' and I was just practicing"?
Or do you believe that people who call themselves "Christians" should not be
judged by the Holy Bible of the Christian Religion--that listening to
somewhat who is not in the least "Christ-like" claim to be a "Christian"
isn't psychopathic behavior on that "Christian"'s part?

Yes I would. Someone who believes in god, such as an ignoramous such as
yourself, might believe god condones his actions.
Someone who does not believe in god would believe that they are ultimately
responsible for anything they do. They would have no excuse.

It's not required, and disbelief is not punishable. There is no requirement
that the president swear on the bible. I believe that when most do, it's
pandering to appease you religious morons who would fall for anything and
anybody who professed a belief in your god.

Calvin Coolidge and Richard Nixon were Republicans.

Which faction is opposed to a President mentioning the word "God"
while in office?
Prove that there are people who hold this straw man point of view.
