That's just not right - Thank goodness I apparently live in a bit more
enlightened area of the US Sad

Well, yeah, but you're The Clayton, so of course will you an
extra cross to bear. So to speak.

Sincerely: really? Death threats? I had the impression that
outside of a few offshore pockets of contagion, fundamentalist
Christianity was mostly a U.S. phenomenon... but Oz? I am
amazed.

As to the girlfriend part, that I can imagine. In fact, the
two most significant, long-term, and all-around wonderful
girlfriends I had in high school and then in college were
people whose religion was centrally important to them.
In fact, both went on to marry ministers. (yes, I do appear
to be an asymptomatic carrier) So for all our sakes I'm glad things
worked out as they did. Or didn't work out as they did.

On the other hand, my mother was quite devout, and we all
went to Church every single Sunday -- and it wasn't until
after she died that I found out that my father had been
going along purely out of love for her; he had no belief
himself. Greater love...

I can well imagine. Who wants to put up with THAT sort of thing
at a social gathering, no matter what your own beliefs.

When I meet folks just movin' down chere, I generally tell
them two things:

1. Don't look for racial prejudice to be worse than from
where you're moving, there's probably less here.

2. Don't think that your religion is your private
business.

I live in Raleigh, NC. One of the most gawdly places on earth and I can't
say that I've run into any problems. I've worked mostly with other
engineers and scientists. As someone else had noted, their education and
expertise in the physical sciences does not preclude people from rather
bizarre ideas about nature, outside of their specialty. I've worked with
some real, live creationists for example. I don't announce myself as an
atheist whenever I meet someone new, but I don't hide the fact whatsoever.
The subject has come up a number of times and I've always spoken my mind
without incident, beyond some occasionally spirited discussion.

I'm the same way. I studied violin - and later viola - for 20 years.
Played about all the symphonic/classical music that exists. But I
prefer to listen to classic rock, and that seems to upset people. They
don't seem to grok the fact that once you've played
symphonic/classical, listening to it isn't that enjoyable. If I *do*
end up having to listen to it, I just hear all the mistakes made by the
strings sections.
