Thanks to the McCarthy EraŽ I didn't know I was an atheist until some
time after I had stumbled over this newsgroup. The definition that
had been hammered into me over and over again through the course of
years was; atheist=godless communist. I wasn't a communist, so that
label didn't fit. I wasn't concerned about any label, I wasn't a
theist and that was enough for me.

A couple of years ago, I was invited by the one atheist lady (who's
name just escaped me) and her fiancee to come visit. I also met
Lorilee, another atheist lady. All good folks.

Some time later I happened to mention to Sunny the four of us stopped
somewhere for a bit to eat and the realization hit me. It was the
first time I've ever had lunch with a group of atheists. Strange
feeling.

Sunny was blown away by this tidbit of information which was so
mindblowing she had to double check it. She asked; "Are you telling
me that this is the first time in your many years you've ever sat down
to a meal where the table seated only atheists?

My reply was a simple; "Yes."

I suspect that gave her quite a bit to 'chew on' for a long while.

Heh. Two decades toiling over a hot oboe, and now I listen 90%
of the time to jazz.

However, in my case, I still do listen to classical music -- I'm
on a prolonged binge of the Romantics even as we type -- and I've
always loved jazz. I was brought up with "How Much is that
Doggie in the Window" and Lawrence Welk and all that other
pablum those all misty-eyed over the 1950s seem to forget --
and then someone gave me "The Golden Era of Dixieland Jazz"
for Christmas, and man ... speak of being struck dumb and
ecstatic by a bolt from heaven... I've never looked back.

Yo, Brenda: you could always listen to the Schostakovich
String Quartets. Whoa, that there was a mistake? Who
knew? I didn't know. Did you know?

(actually, I adore the Schostakovich Quartets. I put
the Brodsky renditions in my CD player, and then couldn't seem
to listen to anything else for about six weeks)

Those who claim that they were once christians and are not anymore
are mostly lying. Most never were christians. Becoming a christian involves
accepting
Jesus as your Lord. Once one accepts a Lord, one is under servitude to that
lord untill that lord releases him. These people for the most part were
posers
when they claimed to be christians.

Only in medieval European feudalism. And not always then (plenty of
medieval vassals skipped out on their lords, and some went to war
against them).

The American Founders accepted King George as their lord, and then
ceased to accept him without waiting for him to give permission.

A good point. A lot did of them did turn on thier lords. But if an
unfortunate turn of events placed them back in that lords jurisdiction
it went very badly for them. I see that you have done some homework.

Yes and rightfully so. But George considered them to be criminals
and would have punished them If he had been able to do so.

The reason that I believe that former christians were never really
christians
is this. If a person really believed that Jesus is the Son of God. It would
stand
to reason that that person would be aware that there was no place where
he could go to escape the authority of Christ. Rebellion is futile against
an
omnipotent Lord.
So to turn on Christ one would need either one of these two conditions.

A. Belief that Jesus was not really the Son of God and that it is therefore
possible to escape His jurisdiction.

B. Not having accepted this Son of God as Lord in the first place.

Logically, neither of these conditions could be present in a christian.
Anyway that's my opinion on the subject.

True.

But if one suddenly loses one's belief in said omnipotence, or even in
the existence of Jesus Christ, because one has gained some
contradictory information or insight, then one would have no reason to
remain Christian.

The belief of the young in Christ is a belief often deriving in part
from naivete, or parental indoctrination. When people grow up and
gain independence, they often gain access to new sources of
information and ideas, and it is these things that can lead to a loss
of faith.

Or they may simply by growing up lose their childlike faith in lots of
things, in which case a childlike faith in an invisible God is an easy
one to lose.

Backwards. The loss of an already held belief is what usually
happens. You seem to be assuming that a belief cannot be lost.

Religious faith isn't logical in the first place, so that may be part
of your mistake.

Yours in Christ,
