When filling out a form, handwritten is good. When writing a separate
page about the student, it should be done on a computer or typewriter.
They don't have to be confidential. The colleges just think that they
are more likely to get accurate information if they are confidential.
I'm not sure what should be done in your circumstances, but here is my
advice.
If you have to write the recommendation yourself, be sure to consult
with the teachers first, and put their thoughts down. That way, it
will be a real recommendation, and each one will be different. After
you have typed it up, go over it with them, and ask for a signature.
Or you could have them write it, and you could translate, perhaps?
