An alternate sacrifice Pat Tillman could have made was to
sign the multimillion-dollar contract with the Cardinals then use that money
to bolster education. How many scholarships might it have produced? How
many computers, music supplies, textbooks, and other teaching aids might
that money have supplied schools? The money might also have been used for
grants to advance medical research in the war against diseases. It might
even have been used to buy medical supplies and protective combat gear for
the troops overseas.
Perhaps he just didn't think about these things. It's a
shame, though. His life was big with potential, then suddenly shrunk down
to the size of a body bag.
That's war.
That's waste.
We're living at a critical moment in history. We need to
be more careful about how we utilize our resources and where we direct our
passions. Who's to say that Tillman's millions would not have been the
final straw that broke cancer's back?
