Post subject: Going directly to grad school after undergrad...are my undergrad stafford loans deferred?
Archived from groups: soc>college>financial-aid (more info?)

When I took Stafford loans, I assumed I would not have to begin
repayment until after my "final" graduation. Obviously, this was a bit
stupid. As I read up a little, it looks like I will have to begin
repaying my undergrad loans, even while taking out new ones to pay for
grad school.

Is this accurate? Or, may undergrad Stafford loans be deferred to
graduation of a post-baccurate degree?

Help is must-anticipated and appreciated.

Stafford (and Perkins) loans continue to be deferred if you go on to
grad school.

But, it is your responsibility to notify your undergrad lenders of this
(the sooner the better), or they will assume you are out of school and
expect payment to begin after the grace period.

If you finish undergrad studies in May and do not begin grad school
until January or later, you will have to make payments from the end of
the grace period until you resume, and again it is up to you to notify
the lenders. In this case you will have already used up your one-time
grace period and payments on those older loans will be due as soon as
you leave grad school.
