Hi all,
I am a high school senior .I am considering studying BA Business and
Management Studies, BA Religious Studies, BA Ethics or BA Journalism
at college. However, I have an interview with a college admissions
counsellor on Sunday, and *still* haven't decided which major to
persue. I have academic interests in each of them, however, due to my
interest in legal matters, current affairs, and government policy, and
my desire to enter the legal profession, getting into law school is
naturally of great importance to me, even though it is a few years
away yet. So therefore, out of the aforementioned subjects, which of
these would, in your opinion, give a broad enough subject area for law
schools to consider seriously admitting me? (of course, they will take
other considerations, i.e. LSAT scores, into account, but I have read
that choice of college major IS important). I was thinking maybe
Religious Studies or Ethics, since they are both rather
critical-reasoning orientated, and rather broad. However, any advice
from anyone on this matter...hopefully before the week-end , would
be *extremely* appreciated.
Many thanks to all of you in advance!!
Best regards,
Jennifer. >> Stay informed about: What major for law school?? |

Choose the major that will further your career after you become an
attorney. (If you intend to be a business attorney, choose the
business degree, etc.) The choice of major is not important because
there are plenty of law schools that will prefer the major you choose.
Those are the schools that you will prefer anyway.

Probably the best advice is to take the one where you'll get
the best GPA, have the best relationships with profs (for those
good recommendation letters), and generally will enjoy the most
(so you'll do the best).
Whatever you take, I'd recommend some business, finance,
and/or accounting-type classes. I majored in Econ and took
accounting, and it was amazing how hard my classmates found it in
Contracts and Business Associations (called Corporations in many
law schools) classes. The teacher would mention words like
"consideration," "compensation," "balance sheet" and "income
statement" and a third of the class would start hyperventilating
and moaning, "But I came to law school because I hate math!"
Knowing business basics and accounting won't particularly help you
get into law school, but it'll help a lot once you're there. >> Stay informed about: What major for law school?? |

By the time you are a senior in college, you might change your mind about
wanting to study law, so study something which will lead you to an alternate
plan should you need one.
Best,
Abe
