Athletic potential can be determined by use of a machine.
High-scoring candidates are recruited, even without experience, on the
basis of potential. Crew is hard muscular workout. Olympic potential
for right person.

My son who has rowed for four years in high school was recruited by
most of the divsion one schools and will be attending Brown in the
fall.

Crew and fencing are two sports that you can walk-on as a college
freshman and can potentially go to the Olympics. And yes you can get
scholarships although this applies almost exclusively to women.
However having rowed in high school is certainly an advantage.
